South Korea's benchmark Kospi index climbed nearly 7% to an all-time high on Wednesday, propelled by a roughly 13% surge in Samsung Electronics shares. The rally was fueled by optimism around strong artificial intelligence growth and hopes for a resolution to the U.S.-Iran conflict.
SK Hynix, another leading South Korean semiconductor firm, saw its stock jump 10% in early trading. Both Samsung and SK Hynix are key suppliers of chips critical for AI systems.
Sentiment improved after reports that Iranian officials were heading to China ahead of a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. This news also helped stabilize oil price fluctuations.
South Korean markets were shut on Tuesday for a public holiday. When trading resumed, the Kospi advanced 6.7% early Wednesday to settle at 7,398.34.
Most Asian equities posted gains, although Tokyo markets were closed for a holiday. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 added nearly 1.0% to 8,766.80 in morning trade. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.7% to 26,081.52, and the Shanghai Composite increased 1.0% to 4,152.68.
In energy markets, U.S. benchmark crude fell $1.37 to $100.90 per barrel. Brent crude, the global benchmark, dropped $1.50 to $108.37 per barrel, continuing Tuesday's declines that erased earlier sharp gains. Prices remain significantly above the roughly $70 level seen before the conflict with Iran.
U.S. military officials have indicated a ceasefire with Iran is in place, though significant uncertainties persist. The U.S. military is working to reopen a route in the Strait of Hormuz to enable oil tanker shipments from the Persian Gulf.
The S&P 500 rose 0.8% to close at 7,259.22, surpassing its previous record set late last week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.7% to 49,298.25, and the tech-focused Nasdaq composite also hit a new high, climbing 1% to 25,326.13.
U.S. economic data presented a mixed picture. One report showed that growth in the U.S. services sector unexpectedly decelerated last month, with some firms citing the war's impact on spending. Another report indicated that U.S. employers posted slightly more job openings at the end of March than analysts had forecast, a positive sign for the labor market.
In currency trading, the U.S. dollar edged down to 157.88 Japanese yen from 157.89 yen. The euro rose to $1.1720 from $1.1693.
