MOEX closes higher after volatile session

  • The MOEX Russia Index rose 0.34% to 2,463.82 points in the main session on Friday, November 6.
  • Segezha led gains without a major corporate catalyst, while VK declined as investors took profits after a sharp rally.
  • Moscow Exchange data identifies IMOEX as a capitalization-weighted ruble index calculated throughout weekday trading.

The MOEX Russia Index finished the main trading session on Friday, November 6, at 2,463.82 points, up 0.34% on the session. TASS reported that the ruble-denominated index fluctuated within a 2,450 to 2,480-point range during the final trading day of the week.

Buying interest remains selective

Market sentiment remained favorable for buying, according to Andrey Smirnov, a stock market expert at BCS World of Investments, as cited by TASS. The advance was not broad-based across all prominent names. Segezha Group shares gained 10.39%, with Freedom Global analyst Vladimir Chernov describing the move as speculative and not linked to a major corporate driver.

VK shares were the session's main decliner among the names highlighted by TASS, falling 3.45%. The decline followed a sharp multi-day rally and was attributed to profit-taking. The contrasting moves suggest that stock-specific positioning remained important even as the index closed higher.

Index framework and trading context

The Moscow Exchange identifies IMOEX as a capitalization-weighted composite index with free-float coefficients. It tracks liquid Russian shares from major issuers across the principal sectors of the Russian economy. The exchange lists RU000A0JP7K5 as the index ISIN and states that, on weekday trading days, the index is calculated from 07:00 to 23:50 Moscow time.

For the next trading session, BCS World of Investments expects the index to remain within a 2,420 to 2,520-point range, while Freedom Global sees a possible corridor of 2,450 to 2,550 points, according to TASS. These ranges are market views rather than official index guidance and underline the uncertainty around the near-term direction.
